Proper Stance For Golf Swing Success: How To Set Up Correctly To Make Better Golf Swings
With the driver, the proper golf stance is slightly wider than shoulder width to ensure extra stability since the driver is the longest club you swing. The full swing with the irons should be just about a shoulder width length stance. This gives you the best likelihood of staying balanced correctly in your golf swing. Swinging in balance is one of the biggest keys to a successful golf swing so having a proper golf stance will allow you to stay balanced and swing the club better.
Weight Should Be In The Balls Of Your Feet
A good test I use with my students is once they get setup up to the ball, I walk in front of them and try to push them over at their shoulders. If they are on the balls of their feet, I can’t easily push them over. If they are on their heels, it’ll be easy to push them backwards. The opposite is also true, if you have too much weight forward or on your toes, you can be pushed over easily if someone tried to push you from behind. So make sure to get the weight on the balls of your feet to ensure good balance.
Drill For Learning The Correct Golf Stance
The above picture demonstrates this helpful drill for getting your stance and golf posture correct. Simply address or set up to the golf ball. Then take your club and put it behind your right arm. Let the club fall straight down. If you are standing correctly, the club should fall through your knees down to the balls of your feet. If you are bending over too much, the club will fall in front of your feet and hit the ground. If you are not bent over enough, the club will fall more towards your heels. This is a great way you can easily check to see if you are set up with a correct golf stance and posture.
