Trying To Get The Perfect Golf Swing? This Isn't Necessary For Playing Great Golf
Many golfers are trying to get a perfect golf swing. When teaching golfers how to build a good swing, I try to combine good golf swing technique with golf swing feel too. A problem I often see is golfers getting too obsessed with their swing mechanics that they forget to just swing the club. By swinging the club with proper tempo, you can still hit really good golf shots without your technique being perfect.
In fact, the more your can let your natural ability take over and just let the club swing, the more likely your golf club will stay on the right swing path and swing plane. It's helpful and necessary to work on golf swing technique when you are with a qualified golf instructor or out on the driving range. But when you step on to the golf course, I want you to be able to forget about your swing mechanics and simply try to feel a good swing.
If you are going to worry about getting something perfect in your golf swing, I would recommend perfecting your golf grip and golf swing setup. These are two things that can be perfect and doing so will definitely help you play more consistent golf. Golfers will often make compensations in their setup or even their grip if they start hitting the ball to the right or left. If you start to hit the ball off to the right, avoid the pitfall of shifting your stance and alignment with your feet to the left. This will only worsen your golf shots in the long run.
The golf stance and setup can start to shift without the golfer even being aware of it. This is why it is important to monitor it in your practice sessions. It can be helpful to put a club down to help with your alignment.
A lot of professional golfers have imperfect golf swings and are still playing great golf. A classic example of a golfer with imperfect swing technique is Jim Furyk. He has a big loop in his golf swing from the backswing to the downswing. However, he understand his swing and it works well for him. If he tried to correct his loop he probably would lose his game because he has been doing it for so long.
Another key to having a great golf swing is being able to understand your swing. Know your tendencies with your golf shots patterns. If you are starting to miss the ball in a certain direction, work on drills to get your ball flight back on track.
It's far more important to be able to know what's going on with your golf ball flight and have a few keys you can fall back on in your golf swing instead of trying to constantly tweak it trying to get a perfect golf swing. Don't try and get a perfect golf swing just so that it looks better or is more technically sound. Too much focus on technique can work against you. Try to blend good swing technique with proper tempo and feel and you'll have good results with your game.
