An Over The Top Golf Swing Can Be Cured With These Simple Tips
If you are suffering from an over the top golf swing, it's important to understand the reason why this is occuring. An over the top swing occurs because the golf club swings too steeply or comes too far outside the correct plane line on your downswing. Becuase the club comes too much from the outside, it is forced inside after you've hit the golf ball. This out to in swing path produces either a slice golf shot or a pulled shot. If the club face is square at impact, you'll tend to slice the golf ball. If the club face is closed, you'll hit pulled shots straight to the left of your target.
The above picture is demonstrating an over the top swing. The club shaft is coming down too steeply. In a correct downswing, the club will swing down right through your right bicep if you were looking at a picture like the one above. If the club is swinging too much down the neck of head, your golf club is too steep from this view.
With a golf swing that comes over the top, the shoulders have started the forward swing or downswing too early. It's important to start your downswing with your arms and not with your shoulders. If the shoulders and upper body open up too early, the golf club is swung to far outside the proper swing path on the downswing.
Getting too steep in the backswing can lead to an over the top downswing transition. With a backswing too steep at the top, the club has no where to go but outside the swing plane line. Try to get your swing more around your body if you are getting too steep. Remember the check point for a proper swing path is to feel your club swing right over the tip of your right shoulder at the top. This will help get your golf swing in the slot and produce a more consistent and better downswing path as well.
