Mental Side Of Golf Tips And Strategies

The mental side of golf is important to master if you really want to play your best golf. Learning how to get out of your own way and stay focused on the course for a full round of 18 holes can be a challenge. Here are some helpful tips for playing better by using your mind correctly.

Practice Swings Vs. Actual Swings

Many times when I'm giving golf lessons, my students will make great practice swings when we are working on improving their technique. But when they stand up to hit the golf ball, a different swing occurs. With the ball in front of you, added tension and anxiety can often add to less consistent and more errant golf shots. I tell my students to just pretend they are making a practice swing and the ball isn't there. This is easier said than done, but putting things into proper perspective can often help a struggling golfer to overcome their fears assciated with hitting the golf ball.

Many golfers need to learn to lessen the pressure they put on themselves and have more fun playing golf. It's really just a game, and often people take golf so seriously they take a lot of the fun out of it. No one will judge you more than you judge yourself. In fact, most golfers are focused on themselves and don't really care what you are doing. As long as you are keeping the pace and have good ettiquette on the golf course, no one really cares how well you are doing. Most people are focused on themselves. Being aware of this can help you relax and have more fun while taking you golf game and score a little less seriously. Most golfers struggle because of being too uptight about how they are performing. Learing to enjoy what you are doing can help reduce the percieved pressure and making golfing a lot more fun and you'll probably end up playing better.

Having a good attitude is important. There's an old saying, If you think you can or you think you can't, either way you're right. This is especially true with golf. If you think you're going to hit good golf shots, you'll be much more likely to perform well than if you doubt yourself and lack belief in yourself or your golf swing.

Thinking Clearly While Playing Golf

Thinking clearly is another aspect to playing well especially under pressure. In order to make smart decisions on the golf course, it's important to have your head clear. If you're nervous or overly anxious, you may make some poor decisions which can cost you unnecessary strokes. Course management is critical for keeping your golf scores under control. If you hit your ball into the trees, make sure you are getting out on your next shot. Don't try to be a hero and hit a big hook around trees if you haven't done it successfully before. Make sure you are playing the percentages. Sometimes a good bogey is okay instead of getting into more trouble and winding up making a triple bogey.

Overcoming Your Fears On The Golf Course

Another part of having a strong mental game on the golf course is not being afraid. Fear is probably the biggest enemy for many golfers. Whether you are playing in tournaments or just out on the course for fun, there are several types of fear situations that may pop up. Knowing how to handle these situations and deal with pressure well will lead to your success.

Fear of embarassment can occur when you are worried about what others are thinking about you and your golf game. The only thing you should be focused on is yourself. Forget about the other people and what they are thinking. This is a waste of mental energy and can be easily eliminated with a little bit of practice. Everyone else is probably worried about themselves too, so you can play better by staying focused on your game and not worrying about other people.
