Learn The Correct Golf Swing Release And Eliminate Thin And Fat Shots
A correct golf swing release happens as a result of a few good things occuring in the swing. Trying to work on your release may not work too well if there is a big flaw in your backswing. Once your backswing is in order, you will be more able to release the golf club correctly coming through the golf ball at impact and in your follow through.
When you start your backswing, there is an angle that is created between your club shaft and your forearms. This happens from setting your wrists. Your wrist hinge in the backswing creates an angle and leverage in your swing. As you transition from the backswing to the downswing and start to swing down towards the ball you'll be unhinging your wrists and releasing the club through the golf ball. The will happen naturally and should not be forced.
You want to simply swing through the golf ball and turn towards your target after you've hit your shot. There is no extra effort being made with the wrists. The golf club will naturally release as you turn and swing through the golf ball. Really good players are able to maintain the angle between their wrists and the club and their arms right up until they are about to strike the golf ball.
Correct Downswing Delayed Release
Incorrect Downswing Early Release
A really common fault that many amateur golfers make is unhinging their wrists too soon in the downswing. This can be called "casting" the golf club or having an "early release". An early release will make you lose a lot of power and hit with much less consistency. Typically hitting the golf ball thin or fat is caused by an early release in your downswing.
Releasing the golf club too early can easily lead to golf hooks as well as thin or fat shots. When your wrists release the club too early, the golf club head can bottom out too soon and lead to inconsistent ball striking.
Now, trying to work on your golf swing release is not something I recommend. If you think this may be your problem what you should do is work on hinging your wrists better in the backswing. This will allow you to set the club better and will promote a proper release in the downswing because it will take longer for the angle to undo itself and the wrists to release the golf club.
A Correct Golf Swing Release Will Occur Naturally With Proper Golf Swing Technique
Trying too hard to force or time your release in the golf swing may not be easy to do. When you work on improving your backswing and allow the club to set properly on the way up, it is easier for a natural and correct release to occur coming into the golf ball at impact and in the follow through.
There is a good training aid called the Impact Bag that many teaching pros use with their students. This helps you feel the correct position you should be in at impact including helping to delay your release right up until you are going to hit the golf ball.
