Golf Sidehill Chip Shot Tips: How To Make Proper Adjustments And Get Up And Down

With a golf sidehill chip shot, there are a few adjustments you'll need to make in your setup in order to hit this shot successfully.

Adjustments In Your Chip Shot Setup For Sidehill Lies

First of all, with sidehill chip shots you want to adjust you shoulders to the slope of the hill you are on. Try to get your body angles matching the slope as close as possible.

If the ball is above your feet, you can choke or grip down on the shaft a little bit to shorten the club. If the ball is below your feet, you will have to bend slightly more with your knees and hips to get your club down to the golf ball.

An up slope or down slope with you chip shot will affect the loft of your wedge or club you are using for chipping. If you are on an upslope, when you set your clubface up to the ball, there will be extra loft added. In order to adjust for this, you want to take a slightly longer swing than normal. When more loft is added to the club, the ball will go higher but not as far.

The opposite is also true with a downhill lie. This will de-loft the golf club face thus causing the ball to travel lower when you hit it and it will also go farther. Remembering to notice and take your uphill or downhill lie into consideration will help you gauge the right distance you need to hit the golf ball.
