Learn How To Perfect Your Golf Hip Turn And Your Entire Golf Swing

An important component to good golf swing mechanics is having a proper golf hip turn. One high ranked teaching pro once told me he seemed to play his best golf when he felt his right hip was turning well in his golf backswing. When golfers turn their hips correctly in the backswing, the golf club is able to swing on the correct swing plane much more easily and more consistently.

The Hips In The Golf Swing Should Turn 45 Degrees

Some golfers struggle with their hip turn. They either turn the hips too much or not enough. Over turning the hips can lead to instability in your swing and can off balance golf shots. Too much lower body movement can make it difficult to hit the golf ball consistently well and may also account for extra compensations.

Proper Golf Swing Sequence Will Include A Good Hip Turn

Having proper Golf Swing Sequence is a must for a good golf swing. When the hips turn correctly and in the right order, the swing can work how it is supposed to. Because your hips should only turn 45 degrees in the backswing, whereas the shoulders turn 90 degrees, the hips must wait before they start to turn.

This is an important point many amatuer golfers either fail to realize or fail to do properly. Waiting until the second half of the backswing to start your hip turn is what helps to create a wind up effect and build power in your golf swing. There must be resistance created between the shoulders and the hips in the backswing for a powerful hit to occur at impact with the golf ball.

When you swing the golf club back naturally and correctly, the hips will respond and turn almost automatically. The important thing is to swing the golf club up, then turn your shoulders, and then turn your hips. The shoulders need to turn halfway or 45 degrees before the hips begin to turn. In the second half of the backswing the shoulders and hips can finish turning to the top of the golf swing together.

Some Common Problems Associated With An Incorrect Golf Hip Turn

The Reverse Pivot is a common error that comes from not turning your hips properly. When this happens the weight shifts to your front foot on the backswing when your weight should be shifting to the inside part of your back foot. The hips may turn but they are moving forward too soon in the golf swing when you have a reverse pivot. The correct way to turn the hips is get them turning behind you. As long as your weight shifts to the inside part of your right foot, you should have accomplished a proper hip turn.

The opposite problem can occur if your weight moves too far back in your backswing so it is on the outside part of the back foot. This means there is either too much lateral movement backwards in your swing or your golf stance is too narrow. Getting the hips to turn just right will put help your weight shift correctly onto the inside part of your back foot.

Again, it is by winding up or creating a coil between your upper and lower body that causes you to load up and be in a powerful position to start your downswing from the top. A good golf swing transition will be able to occur if you have turned the hips correctly in the backswing.
