Golf Ball Trajectory Tips For Controlling Your Ball Flight
Controlling your golf ball trajectory is important and becomes very important especially when different weather conditions are a factor. On windy days, it is good to be able to keep the ball lower so it is less affected by the wind. Hitting the golf ball high can benefit you on approach shots to the green where you want the ball to stop quickly. Hitting the ball low will produce more roll when the ball hits the ground. I prefer to hit most shots a medium trajectory and teach players to do the same if conditions are good.
When you do want to vary your ball flight or golf ball trajectory for whatever reason, there are a few small adjustments you can make in your swing and setup to allow you to do this. In order to hit the ball lower, you can play the ball slightly farther back in your stance. Instead of playing the ball up towards the front of the stance, try and play it just in the middle. I don't generally recommend playing the ball too far back of the middle because it may promote a steeper swing path that can cause some problems. You can also keep a little more weight on your left side, about 60%. This will allow you to hit down on the ball more and promote a lower trajectory. Also, hold your follow through to only 3/4ths of the way through. Making these adjustments will have you hitting the ball lower just like the shot known as the knock down. It comes in handy when it's windy or if you need to hit under trees it can also be helpful to adjust for a lower ball flight.
To hit the golf ball higher, you'll make some of the opposite adjustments you would do if you're trying to hit the ball low. You can play the ball a little bit farther up in your stance. It should never be farther up than the inside of your left heel but a little farther than normal is good. Don't make the mistake of trying to lift the ball up to hit it higher. The loft of the club will still allow the ball to get up in the air properly. You can add a slight tilt of your spine to your setup position. On your forward swing and finish, swing the club up and get your hands finishing high. Make a full and complete follow through and this will promote a higher trajectory golf shot.
