Improve Your Golf Backswing With These Easy Tips

The golf backswing and the downswing are considered the two main components of the golf swing. The backswing consists of the takeaway, the set (or wrist hinge), and the turn with your body up until the top of the swing where there is the transition or pause and the downswing then takes over.

The Takeaway Is A One Piece Motion

The Golf Swing Takeaway in the swing is a one piece motion of the hands, arms, and shoulders all working together as one unit. This is the first part of the swing and lasts the first few feet of the swing. After the initial takeaway, the wrists will start to hinge which creates a set or leverage which will allow you to produce more clubhead speed.

Keep Your Lower Body Quiet During The First Half Of The Backswing

There should not be much lower body movement in the first half of the backswing. Your lower body acts as a stable and solid base which you'll turn and coil against. Once you get to the halfway point in your swing, your shoulders will be turned slightly (about 45degrees).

At this point in the swing you'll turn your lower body and finish your shoulder turn, swinging the club up over your right shoulder with your left arm extended and your right arm folder into a triangle position.

Halfway back in a proper backswing, your arms should be set nicely in the middle of your chest. If you were looking in a mirror, you would see your arms in the middle of the chest instead of out in front of or behind your body.

Another important point about the backswing is to make sure you are swinging the club back as opposed to lifting, guiding, or steering the club. When you let the club swing correctly and more naturally, you'll be able to maintain proper tempo and have better timing in your golf swing.
