Correct Golf Stance tips for the basic full swing:

Having a correct golf stance is very important for hitting solid and consistent golf shots. An incorrect stance will cause you to make unnecessary compensations in your golf swing. Try and keep your golf stance shoulder width apart for most of your full swing shots. With your driver, it's helpful to widen your stance so that it's just slighty wider than shoulder width apart.

One big important part of the golf stance is to keep your weight on the balls of your feet. It's easy to get your weight too far back on your heels or even too far forward in your stance without even realizing you are doing it. Getting too far back in your stance will make you tend to bring the golf club too far inside going back and cause you to get off the correct swing plane. There are a couple of helpful drills which will allow you to make sure your weight is on the balls of your feet. You can find some of these drills on my website.

With short game shots, chips and pitching, you'll want to have your stance a little bit narrower than with your full swing. On pitch shots your stance is only about 75% width and on chip shots 50% normal width is good. There is not a lot of lower body movement or weight shift with these shots so the more narrow stance will help you eliminate some excess body movement.

One helpful tip when you are playing on a windy day is to wider your stance just a little bit. This will keep your body extra stable while you are making your golf swings. It's also helpful to play the ball slightly back in your stance in the wind. This will allow you to hit the ball lower and keep it under the wind so it won't be affected by it as much.
