More Bunker Tips To Help You Master Your Sand Game

Here I will discuss some helpful bunker tips which can get you comfortable and confident with your sand game.

Tip #1) Lead with the handle of the golf club through impact.

If the wrists get too active in the downswing, and club head will come up to the golf ball and enter the sand before the hands get up to the ball. A tremendous amount of power is lost when this occurs. Trying to lead with the handle of the club on the downswing will allow a more powerful hit through the sand and the ball will come out nicely onto the green.

Tip #2) Splash The Sand

The reason a sand wedge is helpful when hitting out of sand is because it has bounce on the bottom of the club. The bounce of the club can vary slightly but any sand wedge has this and you can use it to your advantage to start hitting better bunker shots. When you golf club approaches the sand on a good swing path and enters the sand before hitting the golf ball, the ball will come flying out nicely and will land softly on the green.

It's very important to hit the sand first with your club as opposed to hitting the golf ball. A common instruction some golf teachers will talk about is splashing the sand. The concept is basically make sure you hit the sand before the ball. Hit down on the sand but swing through with acceleration. A full backswing will definitely help to generate power and help you get the ball out of the bunker more consistently.

Tip #3) Make a full swing but vary the length of your follow through to control your distance.

It's important to make a full swing in the sand. This allows you to create clubhead speed and get the clubhead moving through the sand while it is accelerating. If you have a long bunker shot in a greenside trap, make sure you are making a complete follow through. If the pin is cut close and you only have a short distance between where the green starts and the pin, then you can stop your followthough about halfway.

This will still make the ball come out nicely but it won't fly so far. It's important to note that just because you aren't following through all the way, you still need to be accelerating through the sand at impact. You simply want to try and stop the follow through a little shorter in order to control your distance better.
